A 2024 randomized clinical study investigated a skincare serum containing the olive polyphenols oleocanthal and oleacein.
Participants applied the formulation twice daily for 30 days. Researchers observed visible wrinkle reduction in several participant groups, especially among older adults.
The study suggests that EVOO-derived polyphenols may support skin appearance and aging-related skin changes.
However, OHI emphasizes that cosmetic studies are still evolving, and larger long-term clinical trials are needed before strong conclusions can be drawn.
Olive polyphenols and skin regeneration
Another important area of research involves fibroblasts — the skin cells responsible for producing collagen and supporting tissue repair.
Laboratory studies showed that olive polyphenols such as hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol and oleocanthal stimulated fibroblast activity and cell migration associated with tissue regeneration and wound healing.
Researchers observed:
- increased cell proliferation
- improved migration of skin cells
- increased fibronectin activity
- enhanced regeneration-related processes
Although these were laboratory studies and not cosmetic treatment claims, they provide important insight into why olive-derived compounds are attracting attention within modern skincare science.
Skin barrier & sensitive skin research
Olive polyphenols are also being studied for their potential role in sensitive or inflamed skin conditions.
A study using reconstructed human epidermis models investigated a hydroxytyrosol-based cream for skin inflammation and barrier support.
Researchers observed:

- reduction of inflammatory markers
The study suggests that hydroxytyrosol-based formulations may help support compromised skin barrier function.

The expert panel concluded that most olive fruit-, leaf-, seed- and husk-derived ingredients reviewed were considered safe under current cosmetic use conditions.
However, the report also emphasizes the importance of:

- minimizing pesticide residues
- heavy metal monitoring
- proper formulation standards
